Marek Zając
The cycle, ‘Ships’, is directly connected to the artist’s experience of a shipyard in Hamburg where he worked as a regular employee on the refitting of a ship. “Life on a ship reminded me of prison, recalls the artist, everything has its order, each moment of the day is defined and has its proper name, everyone, who is present on the ship knows what their duty is and what their place in this industrial organism is”. The cycle, ‘Ships’, is not only a tale of a shipyard. Several times during the process the artist tried to abandon this motif, but with each painting the cycle came back to life and was raised anew. The ships remained. But these ships are not the most important element. The key to the reading of these paintings are two words: solitude and wandering. The cycle, ‘Ships’, is a tale of a lonely journey, overcoming weaknesses, striving for perfection and struggling with oneself. The ships have ceased to be ships, even though that is undoubtedly their form. “The territory of the canvas, confesses the artist, has ceased to be a postcard only, with its sentimental values, leaving an impression; it has become a search for a cognisant direction which is chosen everyday and taken by each of us”. |
