Piotr Bąkowski
Piotr Bąkowski is an ‘urban painter’. The city is the subject of his work and inspires his technique – he purposely adapts urban strategies: patterns, vlepki (sticker art), graffiti and murals – into his paintings. Piotr Bąkowski sees the city first of all as an artificial paradise – of impressions, impulses and emotions. He feels the intensity of sensations, the pace of life, the multitude of stimuli. He attempts to ‘translate’ all of this into the language of painting and graphics.
A dog appeared in Piotr Bąkowski’s first paintings: ‘Everything started with a dog, which for years was the only faithful companion in my life ...’ he admits. The unexpected flight of his friend became an inspiration for painting. A need appeared to look at the city world from a ‘dog’s perspective’, to register the surrounding intensity and reflect on it. Now other motifs are present in his work: first of all relations between a woman and a man, film, poster and billboard iconography.
Piotr Bąkowski is not ‘cool’ in his work; he gives into emotions and passion. He contradicts his earlier acquired technical skills, he looks for freedom of expression, in his own way. All of this to make his message clear and comprehensible.
