Łukasz Huculak, Higiena

4.12.2009 - 16.01.2010

Łukasz Huculak has re-discovered white. His palette has become lighter. After the greys and browns dominant in his previous paintings – this illumination is purifying and this is how he is painting now. Łukasz Huculak’s latest work will be presented at an exhibition in the Latająca Galeria in December.

Why white? The shift in colour is significant. White is associated with cleanliness and order with organization and clarity. It evokes thoughts of hygiene and sterility, though this may sound too politically correct and moderately medical. Nevertheless, along with hygiene as we understand it, there is also spiritual hygiene, the purifying of corrupt emotions and the restoring of an internal balance. This takes us to back to ancient traditions which sought this important ‘purifying’ function in art. Exhibition spaces, museums, galleries, socles and the display cabinets appearing in Huculak’s paintings are a sign of order and the purification of vision, thought and knowledge. This aspect of his art is extremely important for him.
Bright canvases with exhibit spaces are accompanied by ‘black paintings’ showing the interiors of museum jewellery display cabinets. These specific still-life paintings provoke thoughts of order but more in the sense of construction and composition. Museum and gallery interiors, display cabinets with jewellery – this is the framework of our usual contact with art.
Łukasz Huculak’s recent paintings, however, seem less narrative in approach than his previous ones and the perception of historic Italian artwork, as seen in earlier work, is also less visible but clear references to the history of art are still in evidence.
When we look at the physical aspects of the paintings this presentation of Łukasz Huculak’s work is similar to his previous canvases: visible texture, material substance, heavy, tangible, created from numerous layers of paint and varnish.

Łukasz Huculak graduated from the Wrocław Fine Arts Academy in 2002 and defended his doctoral thesis there in 2009 and has participated in numerous individual and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. He has received many scholarships and awards and is currently at number 9 in the ranking of the Young Art Compass.
